How the counsellor search works

Tell us what’s going on in your own words, and we’ll suggest counsellors who look like a good fit.

What to write

A sentence or two, the way you’d explain it to a friend. What you’re dealing with, who the counselling is for, and anything practical that matters to you: the city you’re in, whether you’d rather meet online, a language you’d prefer, evenings or weekends, what you can afford.

You don’t need the right clinical words. “I’ve been anxious since starting a new job and I’d like to see someone in Victoria in the evenings” works much better than a list of keywords.

What happens next

We read what you wrote for meaning rather than matching words letter for letter, so a counsellor who describes their work as “workplace burnout” can still come up when you’ve told us you’re exhausted at work. If you mention a city, or say you’d like to meet online, we use that to narrow things down.

What the results are

These are suggestions, not a ranking, and not a referral. Every counsellor here writes their own profile. Someone appearing near the top doesn’t mean they’re better, only that what they’ve written lines up more closely with what you told us. Read a few profiles and reach out to anyone who feels right. Most are happy to have a short introductory call first.

If nothing looks right

Try saying it a different way, or leave out a detail you’re flexible on, like the city or a particular approach, to widen the search. You can also browse the full directory and filter it yourself.

Your privacy

What you type is used to run the search, and we keep it only so we can see how well the search is working. It isn’t linked to your name, and counsellors never see it. They only hear from you if you contact them. All the same, please leave out anything you wouldn’t want written down, like your full name or phone number.

If you need help right now

This is a directory, not a crisis service, and nobody is reading what you type as you type it. If you’re in distress or worried about your safety, you can call or text 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) or reach the BC Mental Health Support Line at 310-6789 at any hour. In an emergency, call 911.
