My primary focus is helping men live more satisfying and meaningful lives, often in the face of trauma.
The people I work with are talented, smart, hard-working. But something has rocked the ground beneath their feet, affecting their mental, emotional, and maybe physical health, their relationships, and their sense of meaning and purpose in life.
Often, there’s the realization that events in the past that you thought you had dealt with still have a hold on you and are preventing you from living the way you want to. Many men have had physically, emotionally, or sexually abusive childhoods, whose effects they continue to feel. Others have had frightening or painful experiences as younger adults. Many have come through the worst of the immediate impact, but find their lives still affected years later.
We men often try to push things aside, and won’t admit that anything is wrong. But some problems are hard to ignore. You may have nightmares and flashbacks, or find yourself thinking constantly about something that happened. Maybe you’re jittery, on the look out for danger, and you “over-react” to seemingly small provocations. You look for ways to numb your feelings, but these seem to cause more problems than they solve.
If any of this is going on, if you’re anxious, depressed or irritable, it’s very likely that your relationships are suffering too, leaving you lonely and putting more and more pressure on you and on your loved ones.
HEALING AND GROWTH
The good news is that we all have innate resources that can empower us to heal and grow in the face of trauma. When you come to counselling with me, we’ll work together to help you discover those resources, process traumatic experiences, and find renewed pleasure and purpose in your life.
Although trauma can have very painful consequences, it may also provide an opportunity to reevaluate your life and discover strengths and ambitions you didn’t know were there before. In our work together, we’ll aim for both healing and growth.
