Matt believes that clients are the experts in the counselling space. Using a non-judgmental, collaborative, and trauma-informed approach, Matt works closely with those struggling with mental health concerns like anxiety and depression. Matt also has experience working with those struggling with addiction and families in crisis. Matt has recently been focusing on adolescent and men's mental health, including anger management. Emotion Focused Therapy, DBT, and Attachment Informed modalities are Matt's main interventions of choice.
Matt started his career as a youth worker at the Burnaby School District where he was supporting youth with school and individual issues. After completing his Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology, he started his career in counselling at a community agency where he provided therapy to children, youth, individuals, and families.
In a short time he became supervisor of a program that offered services to at risk youth and their families. Matt adapted an attachment focused perspective in his therapeutic work and believes that much of the issues are rooted in early experiences that can be corrected. His therapeutic specialty focuses on the treatment of trauma, anxiety, depression and addiction issues. He believes that mental illness has an impact on the whole family system and he extends his treatment from the individual to the family.
Lately Matt is focusing on men's mental health while also continuing working with adolescents and couples. Matt tries to be as authentic in session as he is in the real world. Rapport building, and feeling comfortable in session is the foundation of his work.
Its difficult to reach out for support and its a brave step when individuals want to find a therapist despite real challenges to do so. Matt doesn't take this for granted, and believes in taking the necessary time to build a safe and trusting relationship!
