Practice Information

Dr. Jennifer Trew is a Licensed Psychologist (CHCPBC #1014559) specializing in the treatment of stress, anxiety, and mood difficulties in adults. She has training and expertise in assessing and treating depression, extreme shyness (social anxiety), chronic worry (generalized anxiety), panic disorder, agoraphobia, health anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, specific phobias (e.g., fear of needles, flying), and body focused repetitive behaviors (e.g., skin picking). Dr. Trew also provides treatment for stress-related problems, low self-esteem, and difficulty coping with life events.

Dr. Trew primarily uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based approach that is widely considered to be the most effective psychotherapy available for the treatment of anxiety and depression. This approach focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that contribute to anxiety and low mood. She also uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) strategies. ACT is an evidence-based approach that focuses on learning to work with difficult thoughts and feelings differently to help clients pursue important goals and act in line with their values. Her approach is active, collaborative, goal-oriented, and client-centered. She works with her clients to develop a strategic personalized treatment plan that will help them to achieve their goals and make meaningful changes in their lives. Dr. Trew is committed to maintaining best practice standards and flexibly combines evidence-based treatment strategies to meet her clients’ individual needs. Her goal is to support her clients in making changes and developing new skills that they can use throughout their lives.

Dr. Trew received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, BC. She completed a year-long pre-doctoral residency at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario where she received specialized training in the assessment and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. She also completed a minor rotation in psychodiagnostic, personality, and cognitive assessment. Prior to her residency, she completed several placements at locations throughout the lower mainland including Richmond Mental Health Outpatient Services, the psychiatric inpatient unit at the Royal Columbian Hospital, the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the UBC Hospital (now closed), and the UBC Psychology Clinic. She has extensive experience with both individual and group CBT for mood and anxiety disorders. She has also completed specialized workshops on ACT and on CBT for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, health anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, body focused repetitive behaviors, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
