Bob is a very experienced counsellor and has spent his working life helping people solve problems, make good decisions, set necessary boundaries, and improve communication. His counselling philosophy is very practical, assisting people in identifying solutions to their problems and motivating them to make the necessary changes. These changes include both external behaviours and the way clients think about themselves. He helps people narrow their focus to what they can control in life.
As a trained couples counsellor using the Gottman method, and a former family lawyer and mediator, he works with couples to improve or repair their relationships. He is especially effective in helping people decide whether to stay or leave a relationship, or face the consequences of separation or divorce. In situations where the relationship ends, he helps individuals and couples recover and succeed in shared parenting.
Bob’s firsthand experience of seeing many people suffer from separation and divorce inspires him to help people repair their relationships, restore intimate communication, and create healthy and loving relationships. His mediation experience helps couples resolve conflicts rather than engage in pointless fighting. He also believes teaching couples excellent communication and reflective listening skills is crucial to a happy and peaceful relationship.
Bob’s practical approach is also highly effective in helping people with life transitions, grief over loss, and reducing anxiety and depression.
He is trained in evidence-based treatment models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Reflective Listening, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Short Term Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy and the Gottman Method. He also has training and experience in suicide prevention and crisis management,
Bob has Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria, and a Juris Doctor in Law. He has over 30 years of experience. He is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and a professor of Family Law at Royal Roads University.
