Our relationships with our parents, siblings, friends, lovers, spouses and children can be our greatest source of joy, and also provide our most profound experiences of frustration and sorrow. Marilee has been helping individuals, couples and families navigate the rough patches in their relationships for 30 years. Her professional work has been enhanced by her own long term marriage and having raised three children to adulthood.
Marilee received her MA in Counselling Psychology from UBC and her Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) from The Southern California University of Professional Psychology. For her doctoral project she developed a model for helping to rebuild trust after betrayal which is the cornerstone of much of her practice today. Marilee has had great success helping couples negotiate the tricky stages of recovering from infidelity and other betrayals.
In her work, Marilee draws on training in Family Systems, Solution Focussed Brief Therapy, Gottman Method for Couples and Mindfulness Practices. In addition, Marilee also has advanced training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety.
Additionally, Marilee has been working extensively with couples and individuals interested in enhancing their sex lives. She is comfortable addressing a whole host of issues relating to sex and sexuality, such as: low desire, discrepancies in desire, vulvodynia, erectile dysfunction, communicating desires and issues around sexual orientation.
Marilee brings a collaborative approach to counselling. She has tremendous faith in human resiliency and resourcefulness and believes that while clients are the true experts on themselves, there are times when people need outside help in order to chart the best course of action. Marilee works quickly and directly to help her clients address the issues that are concerning them. Sometimes this is accomplished by understanding deeper dynamics; other times by tapping into the client’s own forgotten practices, and other times by developing specific skills such as relaxation, communication skills or assertiveness.
