We are in a unique time, as advances in technology have created new insights into our understanding of the workings of the brain and neuroplasticity. This has led to developments in classic therapeutic approaches, as well as the evolution of new approaches built on connecting the mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Holistic growth can be more readily achieved by combining talk therapy with exercise in a way that fits the client; by developing creative outlets; and with practice, practice, practice. The therapeutic information and guidance provided by Marthe comes from discussion with the client and in accordance with their perceived needs. It is well known to Marthe and the research is very clear - the most significant factor informing positive change in therapy is the relationship between the client and clinician.
Marthe has a Master’s degree in Social Work from U.B.C. (Reg .#8333); is a certified clinical hypnotherapist; and has a Provincial Instructors Diploma. She has over 30 years of experience utilizing individual and group modalities with a variety of clientele, as well as teaching and mentoring other clinicians and counsellors. She has worked extensively with men and women who have experienced trauma, in numerous settings such as women’s resource centers, bridging to employment programs, and mental health clinics.
Marthe bases her practice on a trauma informed approach, incorporating an understanding of how traumatic stress or events impact individuals physically, emotionally, behaviorally, and socially. This includes an awareness of the importance of cultural and gender sensitivity. She is dedicated to cultivating an atmosphere of safety and growth based on non-judgmental acceptance and opportunity for change.
In her clinical practice, she utilizes an eclectic approach based on needs, for example, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Hypnotherapy informed Mindfulness, and a Solution Focused approach. This might include both individual and group approaches.
Many complex presenting issues can involve an interplay between stress, PTSD, trauma, life transitions, depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflicts, and self esteem challenges. A typical session with Marthe may include some of the following components:
- Assessment, history, nature of your concerns.
- Validation of your reality and situation.
- Information to enhance understanding and insight.
- Alleviation of emotional distress through mindfulness, breathing.
- Collaboratively developing a plan of action.
