Emily is a counsellor for Manifest Wellness a men's mental health clinic. Through her counselling work at Manifest she aims to destigmatize mental health support for men, and increasing access to counselling.
Emily Thomsen received her Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Victoria. She is also a trained Art Therapist, Coach, and has training in mindfulness. Emily lived abroad for many years and has a unique perspective on multiculturally sensitive counselling.
Emily has been working in the counselling field for over 20 years in a variety of settings, including government funded agencies, educational settings and private practice. She has experience working with anxiety, stress, depression, anger management, emotional dysregulation, self-defeating behaviors, self-esteem, life transitions, family issues, grief and trauma.
Emily is a client-centered counsellor and uses an integrative approach, pulling from different counselling theories in order to best support the unique needs of her clients. She tends to work with the frameworks of CBT, DBT, MBCT, and SFT. Focus in sessions is based on understanding the particular challenges of each client, individual strengths, resolving inner distress, transforming thought and perceptions, enhancing body awareness, and creating personal goals.
"I believe that people have the natural potential to actualize and find meaning in their lives. This may mean digging deep, having courage, or being vulnerable. Through an authentic and trusting therapeutic alliance clients are able to gain the awareness and self-directed change they are looking for." - Emily Thomsen
