Practice Information
You may have reached a point where managing your symptoms is no longer enough. Perhaps the same emotional difficulties or relationship patterns continue to return, even though you have tried hard to understand or change them. You may function well in everyday life, while privately feeling anxious, lonely, empty, self-critical, or uncertain about who you are and what you truly want.
I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults who wish to understand themselves more deeply. This approach may be particularly helpful when your difficulties feel longstanding, complex, or connected to experiences that are not easily expressed in words.
In therapy, we make space for your thoughts, emotions, relationships, memories, and life experiences. We pay attention to patterns that may be difficult to recognize alone, including the ways past relationships and emotional experiences continue to influence your present life.
People come to me with concerns such as:
- Anxiety, depression, and persistent emotional distress
- Trauma and childhood emotional neglect
- Shame, self-doubt, perfectionism, and harsh self-criticism
- Repeated conflict, disappointment, or disconnection in relationships
- Difficulties with trust, closeness, separation, or emotional expression
- Family expectations and intergenerational conflict
- Identity, migration, cultural belonging, and life transitions
- Emptiness, loss of meaning, or uncertainty about life direction
My approach is primarily psychoanalytic and psychodynamic. It is relational and collaborative rather than based on a fixed set of exercises. The purpose is not only to reduce distress, but also to develop a deeper understanding of the emotional roots and recurring patterns beneath it. Over time, this understanding may support greater emotional freedom, more meaningful relationships, and a more authentic way of living.
Having lived and practised in Hong Kong and Canada, I have a particular understanding of Chinese, Hong Kong, Asian Canadian, immigrant, and second-generation experiences. For some clients, personal needs may conflict with family loyalty, cultural expectations, filial responsibility, or the pressure to remain emotionally restrained and maintain harmony. Therapy offers a place where these tensions can be explored with care and complexity.
Where relevant, my work may also draw upon Jungian perspectives on dreams, symbolism, identity, personal meaning, and psychological development.
I provide therapy in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, in person at my Richmond office and online throughout British Columbia.
We usually begin with two or three consultation sessions to understand your concerns, background, hopes for therapy, and whether we may be a good fit. You are welcome to contact me for a free 15-minute consultation.
