Zoë Younger is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who sees individuals and couples for therapy in downtown Vancouver, including VPD Crime Victims Assistance Program (CVAP) clients.
Anxiety, depression, and stress can hijack our hearts, minds and relationships. Self-doubt, insecurity and frustration can lead us to withdraw from others leaving us feeling lonely and isolated. In some cases we may use unhealthy coping strategies including misusing food, alcohol and drugs, or other self-sabotaging behaviour. Identifying and harnessing our strengths, and learning how to cope and thrive in the face of life’s challenges isn’t always possible on our own.
Challenging relationships with intimate partners and family members can also throw us off our game. Sometimes we feel like we are drifting apart, or unable to navigate the inevitable changes in roles and responsibilities that come with changes in our lives (marriage, babies, careers, relocating, caring for aging parents etc). When we find ourselves struggling to communicate with loved ones, we can feel misunderstood, frustrated and scared about what the future will bring. We may react by giving up, or by using a lot of energy trying to “fix it” but feeling like we’re spinning our wheels. Sometimes we lose sight of what is really important to us, or find it hard to ask for what we need.
There are many reasons why a person may find themselves overwhelmed or unsure of what to do next. Most people will find that counselling can help. In therapy, we will unpack your story and try to understand how you have gotten to this place. We will look at what is working well for you now, and what you want to change. We can then work on little changes that, over time, can amount to new, more effective ways of being your best self. Couples will be able to try new ways of communicating more effectively, building intimacy, and strengthening their connection.
