Parenting is the most invested relationship one can partake in. There are many tasks and challenges involved in guiding little people towards becoming competent, responsible, and happy adults. Despite parent's best intentions, life can force us to face unexpected events and troubling experiences that affect children's and family's ability to function optimally. This is when it may become key to activate the perspective that "it takes a whole community to raise a child" and bring in assistance and a sense of support from community professionals.
I have a degree in Child & Youth Care, a Masters in Counselling Psychology and a Certificate in Expressive Arts Play Therapy. I have worked in schools for the last 16 years as a counsellor for children and youth. In my work I incorporate various therapeutic approaches depending on the best fit and I am currently receiving clinical supervision in Sand Tray therapy. Expressive art and play therapies allow children to use their innate wisdom and creativity to validate their inner world and guide us to where they need assistance in understanding and resolving their struggles. Play is a child's language and through play they can share their story in a way that feels safe and natural. My goal is to help children recognize their strengths and note their resilience while assisting them in building their core competencies, specifically focusing on their emotional and social development. I see through a trauma informed lens and I believe in the importance of healthy attachments in providing children with a sense of well being and the benefits of working with the systems (i.e. school, family) that are in relationship with the child.
I am a family play therapist trained in Filial Therapy. This evidence based approach works with the whole family to develop healthy connection and strengthen relationships and attachment. It aims to assist families in improving communication, resolving problems and changing some behavior or interaction patterns. It improves family's coping skills and parent's confidence while reducing frustration.
I have extensive experience in curriculum development and group work and I am a trained Incredible Years Social/Emotional curriculum facilitator . I am passionate about incorporating social and emotional education and social skills practice in the classroom and I love doing community workshops. I have experience with Filial therapy and in helping parents build healthy attachment with their children through the practice of attunement and play. I have studied brain development, epigenetics and the neuroscience relating to toxic stress through the Brainstory Certification process.
