Sarah Turner is a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Vancouver, BC providing individual and couples counselling for a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, fear, stress, heartbreak, trauma recovery and relationship challenges.
Typically, people seek help from a qualified and unbiased professional during transitions or challenges in work or family life, or at times of crisis due to loss or trauma. Seeking external support from a counsellor is often a last resort. Either friends or family are unable to offer unconditional support or the usual coping strategies just aren't working. Without support, we may feel lost, isolated, powerless, or confused with diminished self-esteem. Trusting the need for support in the context of a safe therapeutic relationship shifts unhealthy ways of coping into more empowering ones that decrease pain and suffering. When our basic human needs for social and emotional connection are met with compassionate attention, we also learn how to support change that is already underway.
My approach is experiential and collaborative to respectfully meet the unique needs of clients. With compassion and integrity, I combine talk therapy with body-oriented approaches through evidence-based research in current neuroscience. Paying attention to language, emotions, beliefs, breath, body sensations, and non-verbal communication offers insight and resources to work more effectively with the current issues toward desired outcomes and resolution. Through this process, we also discover patterns or beliefs about the whole person within the context of individual, family and cultural histories.
By including the wisdom of the body, mind, emotions, spirit and interpersonal relationship, we gain awareness into our full potential with new resources that become practical tools for daily use. Learning how to actively engage our personal resources is key to restoring trust in our basic goodness. Self-trust is an essential building block that we need to develop, resolve trauma, increase resilience to stress and deepen connections to self and the people around us. Long-lasting change occurs through this process of body-mind integration to courageously move beyond the past and live more fully in the present.
I hold a Masters in Counselling Psychology and a Masters in Fine Arts. I am particularly interested and trained in body psychotherapy and the interconnected system of body, mind, emotion, and interpersonal relationships. Supporting stress in the whole system transforms anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress into innate healing capacities, resilience and healthy connections.
