I qualified as a counsellor in 1996 after completing my Bsc and M.A. in psychotherapy and counselling from Regent’s College in the U.K. My training involved a range of theoretical approaches which included cognitive behaviour therapy, existential analysis, humanistic and person centered therapy. I have had extensive experience working for the health care system, for an Employee Assistance Provider as well as in private practice.
I now concentrate mainly on my private practice where I provide counselling for individual’s couples and children. I have play therapy facilities so that I can help young children as well as teenagers. I am interested in client’s getting the help they need and adapt my approach to meet the needs of each client.
Why People Seek Counselling ?
Here are some of the reasons people might seek counselling:
· Suffering from anxiety issues
· Feeling depressed or low
· Wishing to deal with your anger more effectively.
· Having parenting difficulties and needing some strategies to help.
· Concerned about your child’s behaviours either at home or school.
· Having difficulties in your intimate relationship.
· Having feelings or thoughts that are causing you problems.
· Knowing what you wish to change and needing some help to reach your goals.
· Having problems at work.
· Have past issues you wish to resolve.
· Dealing with grief or loss.
What Counselling Gives Them
Counselling provides a safe supportive environment for them to explore these issues, gain understanding and learn new strategies to deal with life. Helping clients figure out how to use their own strengths and abilities to find ways of making their lives work better is an essential part of this process .
I believe that there is usually a good reason for the way people act when faced with difficult, challenging and traumatic experiences even when their thoughts and behaviours might be self defeating or self destructive.
Many clients suffering from anxiety have been successfully helped by my approach which combines cognitive behaviour therapy and a deeper understanding of the mechanism behind anxiety. I am interested in helping couples work through their difficulties so that they can enjoy healthier relationships.
I use play-therapy with children to help them with issues such as: reactions to parental separation, anxiety, depression and aggressive behaviours. I also give parents strategies and insight to assist them with parenting challenges.
