"Life is water, not stone."
I, Spencer McLean, came across this anonymous saying several years ago and, every day since, it has stayed with me. For me, it has been a wonderful way of viewing life, as a daily challenge from which to learn and grow, and is now a core principle of my therapeutic practice.
To live well is to learn: about ourselves, about those around us, and about the world that encompasses us. To live well is to learn how to flexibly shape ourselves to the needs of the moment but to also resiliently hold our shape when others would have us be what we do not wish to be. To live well is to avoid being rigid and unyielding and hard when we should be accepting and open, and welcoming.
I became a counsellor to go on a journey of discovery, with myself and with those of you who do me the honour of sharing your lives with me. Let's walk together for awhile and see what we learn, about ourselves and where we fit into the world around us.
I am a registered clinical counsellor (18771) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. With a background in counselling and creative writing, I care deeply about understanding my clients and viewing them as valuable people with unique life stories who are more than what ails them. To this end, I am honoured to work with individuals from all backgrounds and to engage with the ways in which attributes like age, culture, gender, disability, and spiritual practice have shaped our lives.
I have assembled a diverse toolkit of therapeutic treatments, drawn from cognitive, mindful, and somatic traditions, that are built upon evidence-based understandings of psychological concerns and how to treat them. I am certified in the treatment of
- anger management,
- depression and mood disorders,
- eating disorders,
- grief and loss, and
More generally, I focus on providing support to people who are facing personal, interpersonal, and occupational challenges and transitions.
I believe that, despite the challenges that our circumstances place in our path, everyone possesses the ability and the desire to be who they want to be. It's a matter of cutting through those challenges to find our way forward. I consider it my mission to provide people with a safe environment in which to learn the skills and the mindsets necessary to blaze a trail to that ideal self and realize their full potential.
