I focus my work on helping men and woman create meaningful change. I partner with my clients by creating an understanding, non-judgmental and completely confidential environment that allows them to courageously tackle the problems that they are facing.
If you struggle with an issue that you wish you could change then I encourage you to call me today to schedule an appointment.
I have specialized training in issues related to:
- Addictions
- Trauma
- Relationships
- Life Direction and Purpose
- Parenting
- Anxiety and Depression
Male issues
I wish I had more time with my family! Nobody understands me! I feel overwhelmed by my responsibilities and obligations!
Many men in Western culture are socialized to not express their feelings, to deal with issues in a “logical or rational” way, and believe that being vulnerable is weakness. It is common for some men to not only have difficulty sharing their feelings but feel unsure as to what they are feeling. I support my male clients to create a space in their lives where they can share their issues and feelings as when emotions are not handled in a healthy manner, are repressed or denied then unhealthy or inappropriate behaviors can manifest. Key areas: Fatherhood, Intimacy, Leadership, Managing Feelings, Abandonment, Emotions, Anxiety.
Addiction
I am out of control! I wish I could change! I am lost!
I approach addiction using a Narrative lens and encourages clients to define what the problem is and then to externalize it as separate from their own self. It allows the client to make meaning of their life as distinct and separate from the ‘problem’. As a result I find my clients begin to take the courageous journey towards complete transformational change where the have a new vision and hope for their life.
Key areas: Alcohol and substance abuse, Sexual compulsivity.
Relationship Counselling
She always wants more! He never listens! It is not like it used to be!
I help couples to re-connect and learn how to listen to one another in a way that is affirming and respectful. I will help partners to become aware of personal biases that each may bring to the relationship and how they impact your communication style. You will discover how to connect on a deep and intimate emotional level that is mutually satisfying and fulfilling.
Key areas: Listening, Emotions and feelings, Intimacy, Conflict, Parenting, Life Change, Attachment.
Trauma
Why am I anxious? What happened to me?
Trauma occurs in many forms including physical, emotional, and sexual abuses as well as witnessing violence and physical neglect. These traumas often impact our attachment style and subsequent coping methods. I work with clients to re-build a safe attachment whereby they can experience the emotions that lead to healing, resiliency and transformation.
Key areas: early childhood physical, mental and sexual abuse; attachment trauma;
About Richard
I have over two decades of experience creating the conditions for individuals to create meaningful change. My personal journey of healing from abandonment, early childhood trauma and the loss of a child enables me to create an understanding and supportive space for individuals to move towards a healthier future.
Professionally I have been involved in various industries prior to being a therapist including an executive in sales and marketing, business consultant, and construction. I also spent a number of years training as a First Responder and volunteering with the Vancouver City Police. I find that my range of experiences allows me to connect with my clients on a deep level.
My Approach:
I am an integrative therapist and am informed by AEDP, CBT, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Narrative and Strengths based theories of psychology. My work is shaped by the research and training in attachment and trauma with Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Dr. Diane Fosha. My approach is influenced by the work of Dr. Brene Brown with regard to shame, vulnerability and moving towards feeling worthy.
