Nicole Maier is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who sees clients in her North Vancouver office.
In my practice I work with clients who feel stuck, feel powerless, feel overwhelmed. I see people who feel empty. I see teens struggling in their school life, adjusting to blended families, and trying to figure themselves out. All of which which can be so very complex and overwhelming to understand. I also work with people who feel like they are failing at quitting smoking, losing weight, or eating well, leading healthy sex lives, or just taking care of themselves.
Through counselling we can work to unravel some of the stuck ways of being and view one's situation a new way. People are often pleasantly surprised to know things can actually be different for them even when it doesn't feel that way. Being able to respond in a new way, ie not over or under eat, function in your most important relationships in a healthy loving way for you and others, move towards your dreams and goals, feel safe in your home that has changed, discover how to tolerate your anxiety and even start to like it, and begin to carve out the path that you want. These are a few of the benefits that come with counselling.
In order to achieve the success you are looking for, the most important thing we do in counselling is get to know you better: not just what you like to do in your spare time, or how you were raised, we need to uncover how you are, who you are, what happens in your body, what you feel from moment to moment. The bulk of the counselling session focuses on what is happening for you in the present moment. This technique and style is quite different than most conventional therapy. I do not spend large amounts of time on your childhood. Instead we work together to uncover the roots of the problems you are dealing versus the problems themselves. This way, you develop tools right away to take with you for action. At times, if it works better, we can take our sessions outside and talk while walking, or hiking, dogs welcome!
I bring a varied background into my practice. I was an RN for 10 years at Lion's Gate Hospital working with critically ill patients in the ICU as well as supporting families through the stressful process. I am a Master's trained counsellor with extensive training and a deep passion for learning about how the brain works. I bring this into every session I will work with you. At home I am a mom to 4 children, married, have 2 dogs, and aim to strike the elusive work-life balance, with varying degrees of success.
I look forward to meeting you!
