May brings over 30 years of practice experience to her counselling. As a medical social worker, May counselled in many settings including: rehabilitation, palliative care, and Hospice. May developed expertise in trauma, bereavement and loss, relationship trauma, and with assisting individuals and families rebuild their lives. May is registered with the BC College of Social Workers (RSW),
May’s philosophy is that fulfilling relationships are the key to our happiness. That includes relationship to family, friends, workmates and the relationship we have with our self.
She understands cultural, race, poverty and sexual orientation differences and incorporates these into her practice.
May is a strong proponent of working from a strengths-based practice framework when counselling individuals and families. May believes that all people, regardless of their personal struggles and trauma, come to therapy with inherent strengths and capacities. Through the therapy process, it is these strengths and capacities that can be mobilized into positive action.
May has a gentle and calm presence and a passion for working with people to assist them to achieve their full potential. She uses a range of approaches, including Narrative Therapy, Solution focussed therapy, mindfulness, relaxation, communication skills or assertiveness, and different techniques to guide discussions and uncover new ways of understanding yourself and your challenges. She brings a collaborative approach to counselling and has tremendous faith in human resiliency. May also applies mindfulness approaches to helping clients deal with depression and anxiety.
I know from personal experience that counselling takes courage and to that end, I will aim to provide a safe and welcoming place for you to begin to do the work of transformation. May stays current with new developments in the field of counselling and continues to integrate these into her practice to enhance her work and benefit clients whenever possible. She creates a warm comfortable, safe and trusting atmosphere where clients can explore whatever they need to in a pace that feels right to them.
