Maura Gowans is Dene from Tulita, NT and has been honoured to live on the Unceded Traditional Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, Semiahmoo and Kwantlen First Nations for the past 27 years and in doing so is committed to supporting others in a good way to honour this privilege. Maura Gowans is a registered social worker (BCCSW, 12924) and was born in Yellowknife, NT. She is the proud mother of 5 boys and has worked in the non-profit sector for over 20 years in various positions including Battered Women’s Support Services, Lookout, Urban Native Youth Association, Downtown Eastside Youth Association, Family Services of Greater Vancouver and Atira Women's Resource Society.
Most of the work Maura has done has been advocating and supporting women and children that have been impacted by violence including Children who witness abuse counselor and stopping the violence counselor. She is also very passionate about preventive measures within the Indigenous Communities in terms of breaking cycles of abuse, addiction and poverty as well as working to keep families together. She works from a Strength based, trauma informed and anti-oppressive approach and is skilled in cultural sensitivity, CBT, narrative therapy and solution focused therapy.
Maura is an active member within the community through social justice and advocacy.
Client fee individuals:$150.00 an hour
Client fee couples/families:$160.00 an hour
