Do your emotions feel impossible to understand? Is it a struggle to put your feelings into words? Maybe you are feeling out of touch with yourself, anxious, depressed or overwhelmed and you don’t even understand why, never mind knowing what to do about it. You’re not alone with this, and change is possible, however confusing and hopeless things might feel. My approach to therapy helps you to connect with your emotions, to tune in and listen to what they are telling you, and to find the language you need to understand and express them. “I don’t know how I feel” is a perfectly acceptable place for us to start.
Counselling offers a judgement-free space to explore what is happening for you and how you would like things to be different. I believe we all have the resources we need to understand our experience, and to make change. But it can feel impossible to access those resources without the right support.
As a person-centred counsellor, I believe that you are the expert on your life, not me, and not anyone else. My role is to create a space where you feel able to open up and be curious about your experience. Together we will look at how your past might be influencing your present, what beliefs you are holding about yourself and your capabilities, how you are showing up in your relationships, and more.
I have significant experience working with men, and have developed a real sensitivity and empathy for the struggle many men face in opening up about their emotions. I believe this difficulty stems from the damaging cultural messages men receive in our culture, and is an understandable response to the male experience. My work is grounded in the belief that we all have different ways of expressing ourselves and that using emotional language is not the only - or the correct - way to navigate our experience and relationships.
My work as a suicide prevention therapist has enabled me to sit with a wide range of experience. Whatever you are bringing, it is welcome here.
I currently have online sessions available on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
In-person sessions are available on Saturdays in a comfortable space in East Vancouver.
