Do your emotions sometimes feel like a mystery? Is it a struggle to put your feelings into words? Maybe you are feeling out of touch with yourself, anxious, depressed or overwhelmed and you don’t even understand why, never mind knowing what to do about it. You’re not alone with this, and change is possible, however confusing and hopeless things might feel. My approach to therapy helps you to connect with your emotions, to tune in and listen to what they are telling you, and to find the language you need to understand and express them. “I don’t know how I feel” is a perfectly acceptable place for us to start.
If you're worried about being constantly asked how you feel, or about awkward silences in the therapy room, you won't find that here. I encourage you to let me know when things feels uncomfortable, and I come equipped with lots of things to try until we find what works. I use humour, directness, prompts, helpful strategies, and most importantly, I work alongside you in a human and engaged way. Our therapy will be collaborative and lead by what feels helpful to you.
I have significant experience working with men, and have developed a real sensitivity and empathy for the struggle many men face in opening up about their emotions. I believe this difficulty stems from the damaging cultural messages men receive in our culture, and is a perfectly understandable response to the male experience. My work is grounded in the belief that we all have different ways of expressing ourselves and that using emotional language is not the only - or the correct - way to navigate our experience and relationships.
My other specialist area is with women experiencing difficulties with their menstrual cycles. If you find yourself feeling an increase in anxiety, depression or overwhelm at various stages of your cycle, I can help you navigate this. Perhaps you have tried the medical route, but have been unable to find real help for the emotional upheaval you are living with. Maybe you are tired of having your experience dismissed as being “just your hormones” or “only PMS”.
Prior to entering the therapy world, I practised as a pharmacist in community healthcare for over ten years. I combine my knowledge of menstrual cycle biology with my awareness of trauma and mental health, to help you understand what is happening in your body. I believe that the emotions arising more powerfully at certain times in our cycle deserve to be validated, and can often tell us a lot about what is going on for us below the surface, such as where our needs are not being met, and what changes we could make to improve things. It is my deep belief that these emotions are as important as all others and that they deserve to be felt, heard and healed.
I currently have in-person slots available on a Thursday in my therapy room in Yaletown, Vancouver.
