Hi, my name is Lorraine Irlam. I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor and the founder of Insomnia Help Canada.
If struggling to fall asleep, tossing and turning, or waking up too early has become your norm, you are not alone. Please know you don't have to live like this. There is a way out
When my daughter was born, I lost my ability to sleep. Band-aid solutions like supplements, relaxation exercises, and acupuncture targeted my insomnia symptoms instead of taking care of what was disrupting my sleep regulation systems. So they failed to provide genuine, long-term relief.
Things like the birth of a child (in my case), stress, breakups, or pain can trigger what should be temporary bouts of insomnia. Yet sometimes, what starts as a short-term sleep problem can turn into a long-term vicious cycle if not properly treated.
After a 20-year battle with chronic insomnia, I found a way to reclaim my life. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (or CBT-I) addressed the actual causes of my sleep issues and inspired me to help others get the sleep they need.
Today, after years of training, I blend my personal experience, professional background, and 30 years of sleep research to empower adults with effective tools for quality sleep.
My Experience
I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Simon Fraser University.
I have helped many individuals and groups take control of their lives by sleeping well again. I also work with clients struggling with insomnia in the context of other issues, such as anxiety, depression, cancer, chronic pain, menopause, sleep apnea, and more.
I have spent hundreds of hours on professional development, continuing education, and consulting with world-renowned sleep specialists. I’m passionate about devouring sleep research and always learn from my clients’ journeys.
My Approach:
My focus therapy modality is CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I), widely recognized as the #1 treatment for chronic insomnia. I also integrate mindfulness and self-compassion practices when appropriate.
My CBT-I services include:
