I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC # 11135) and psychotherapist working in Vancouver. I can help you if you are struggling with low mood, depression, anxiety/panic, or problems in your marriage or intimate relationship. I work with people ranging in age from teens to older adults, and I offer individual and couples sessions. I offer counselling virtually via the OnCall Health e-health platform (an encrypted secure platform that protects client privacy and confidentiality in accordance with Canadian regulations and law).
At their worst, anxiety and depression can leave you feeling hopeless and struggling to cope. These problems can range from mild to severe, and often flare up in a way that makes life difficult. Are you trying to get out from under the weight of feeling depressed or anxious but not quite sure how to do this?
If you are feeling despair, excessive guilt or worthlessness, numbness, flatness, irritability, or are stuck in sadness, I can help you change your mood for the better. If you are having difficulty with your sleep, energy, or concentration, and you are struggling with procrastination, excessive worry, or panic attacks; as your therapist, I can help you to tame your anxiety.
Counselling provides a safe space to look at these issues and the stresses you are facing in your life. I will support you to understand what is happening and develop the right skills to challenge your low mood or anxiety so that you can get your life back on track.
Maybe you are looking for a counsellor to help you with difficulties in your marriage or intimate relationship. If so, you are not alone. This is a common area of concern that motivates people to seek out help.
Do conversations with your partner turn to arguing and conflict? Are you finding it hard to talk about your concerns and be heard? Has the passion and spark in your relationship turned into dullness and disinterest? Do you want to make things work before giving up? If so, I can work with you and your partner to find practical ways to improve your relationship.
Within a safe and respectful relationship, we will work together to help you overcome anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges. You can find more enjoyment and pleasure in your daily life. If you need to be able to improve your functioning at work, improve the quality of your sleep, interact in social situations with less anxiety, find ways to connect with your partner and have less conflict in the relationship, or relief from low mood, we can adapt the therapy to meet your specific needs.
In order to be an effective support to you I integrate different therapeutic approaches into my work. My practice includes methods of therapy that are research based and rich in many decades of clinical experience. I actively integrate current research about human development, emotion, attachment, and the brain, into my work so that therapy will be effective for you.
The counselling that I offer will assist you to develop the skills and resources you need in order to think, act, and feel in more adaptive and flexible ways. I include a focus on somatic, or body-oriented, psychotherapy into my practice. Somatic/body-oriented therapy allows us to work with the body and emotion, to get at the roots of anxiety, depression, or conflict. Many of the symptoms of anxiety or depression are found in the body, and having an approach that digs deeper than simply talking about your concerns, or focusing just on your thoughts, can help to bring about lasting and sustainable results.
I also regularly work with clients experiencing the following life challenges:
- grief and loss
- concerns about sexual identity
- career or scholastic difficulties
- significant life transitions
I offer new clients a free 20 minute consultation to ensure that working with me will be a good fit. You can contact me by email at therapy@grantmcmahon.ca or by phone/text at 250-504-0698
