Barbara has over 35 years of experience in the Mental health field in both the public and private sectors. Her Clinical practice started in Social Work, then changed to Counselling Psychology after attaining her Masters Degree at the University of Victoria. Her undergraduate study included communications and sociology at York University.
Barbara’s professional experience is vast and includes, therapist, organizational consultant, EFAP counsellor, adult educator, and facilitator/trainer. Her most recent position was as an Account Executive in an EFAP firm. Her strength in all of these roles had been her warm and caring personality.
Models of counselling Barbara uses are: Solution Focused therapy which is goal directed toward therapeutic change. It focuses on an individuals strengths, the present and working toward a better future. This model identifies specific areas of concern, involves goal-setting and targets solutions in a results-oriented way; and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which is based on the theory that maintains that how a person thinks, largely determines how one feels and behaves. This model works well for people dealing with self-esteem issues and depression/anxiety.
Her personable style provides a safe place for clients to explore their issues and to reach practical solutions. She is knowledgeable, creative, results-oriented and supportive.
I love to work with people to help them find different ways to cope with obstacles/issues, to become more resilient and to find more joy in their lives.
