I work alongside youth and adult clients to support and explore challenges related to neurodivergence, trauma, mental health, identity, sexual orientation, gender identity, well-being, relationships, and confidence.
About Me: Hello and welcome. I am a queer, cisgender, neurodivergent white settler woman. As an individual counsellor/therapist, I work collaboratively with youth and adults to support and explore neurodivergence, mental health, identity, trauma, sexual and gender identity, well-being, relationships and confidence. Many of my clients are formally diagnosed or self-identified Autistic and/or ADHD, and many are members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. I have a Master of Social Work from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria.
Practice Approach: I have a particular interest in the intersection of neurodivergence and trauma, particularly with clients who are women and people raised as girls. I mainly work from trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming perspectives. Trauma-informed means we move slowly and take our time, move at your pace, and ensure that you have agency in sessions (feeling heard and focusing on what you want to work on). Neurodiversity-affirming means we get to know your unique brain (how it works and what it needs). It can also include exploring and processing what you have been taught and made to feel about yourself.
In sessions with me, we will explore how you learned to cope and navigate the world, and how that is still showing up in present-day relationships/interactions. We will go beyond what is happening at the surface, and work through what is happening underneath. As we grow personal insight and self-confidence in who we are over time, coping and navigating the world becomes more manageable.
I also enjoy working with youth to support and navigate big emotions, communication, boundary setting and self-advocacy, neurodivergence (Autism, ADHD, giftedness, learning disabilities), sexual and gender identity, coping with big life transitions, and navigating relationships.
My method is integrative and incorporates elements of emotion-focused therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) to meet each individual client’s values, needs, and strengths.
I am set up as a service provider with the BC MCFD Autism Funding program and am able to bill the ministry directly for family counselling services that use this funding. Please reach out if you have any questions about this process.
About Rae Morris Counselling Group: All of our clinicians are registered social workers whose practice is grounded in values of social justice and equity, and incorporate a client-centered, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and neurodiversity- and identity-affirming approach to counselling and therapy. All of our counsellors have knowledge and experience working alongside neurodivergent clients, including those who are suspected, self-diagnosed, and/or formally diagnosed as Autistic and/or ADHD. We work collaboratively with clients to disrupt deficit-oriented perspectives on mental health and neurodivergence and to support people in enhancing self-awareness and acceptance, well-being, confidence, mental health, and relationships. Not all of our clients are neurodivergent and a formal diagnosis is not necessary to work alongside any of our clinicians.
