Joe Barnwell, M. Ed. is a Registered Clinical Counsellor who sees therapy clients in his North Vancouver office. 

Joe provides counselling to people who are struggling with the impact of trauma. There can be effects, which include difficulties with relationships, concentration, motivation, self-confidence, feelings of helplessness and panic, or sleeping problems. 

In many cases, symptoms of anxiety and depression are linked to a trauma that has not resolved in a person's nervous system. Car accidents, physical assaults, sexual abuse, witnessing violence, and sudden loss are some examples of traumatic events. 

During a traumatic event, the fight, flight, freeze response is triggered. If the energy that is part of this does not discharge at the time of the traumatic event, a person's system may remain on high alert, subconsciously, trying to avoid "danger" in the environment. In order to feel a sense of calm and safety, more confident, focused and motivated, it is important to address the effects trauma has had on the client's nervous system. 

As a counsellor, Joe helps clients overcome not just negative and destructive thoughts and feelings but also helps clients resolve the trauma that exists in their nervous system. Once a significant shift happens at a nervous system level, feelings and beliefs that are part of a pattern of negativity can change. This will give clients an opportunity to form more positive views of themselves and regain a greater sense of control so they can lead more fulfilling lives. 

Joe Barnwell has been a counselling professional for over 20 years. In that time he has worked with trauma extensively. Joe is trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Response Therapy, EMDR.
