I believe that human beings are fundamentally relational – we understand ourselves through our relationships with others, and our relationships with ourselves. Counselling provides an opportunity for a unique and healing relationship- one of non-judgement, unconditional acceptance, and active collaboration. I am passionate about the work that I do, and feel that it is my duty (and privilege!) to connect with you, as a unique individual with a complex history and identity/ies. In our work together, expect to feel safe in your skin and secure in the room with me, which has great power to translate in your life at large.
The counseling approach I use is called Emotions Focused Therapy (EFT). For many, the word “emotion” can be scary. We are not often brought up in a world that tells us “its ok to feel how you feel”, and we are very lucky if we have ever been modeled healthy emotional regulation. As such, we often create ways to avoid the scariness of emotions- we withdraw, lash out, numb out, develop physical ailments and more. My approach to counseling allows us to safely get in touch with the usefulness of emotions- what they tell us that we need, and how we can go about getting those needs met.
My areas of interest and experience include but are not limited to:
Depression, anxiety, stress management, relationship conflict/disconnect, break ups/ divorce, isolation/loneliness, communication, parenting and child rearing issues, LGBTQ issues, gender identity, sexuality concerns, grief and loss, mindful living, life purpose/balance, life transitions, problematic eating, and body image issues.
I work with individuals and with couples. Some people prefer an active goal-oriented structure, while others prefer a more process-oriented open approach. I work hard to meet your needs and openly ask for feedback about what works best for you. EFT lends itself very well to both individual work and couples/relationship work, focusing on changing challenging emotion through corrective emotional experience. "The only way out is through" and getting through pain or personal blockages in your life, is so much more bearable, encouraging, and successful with the support of an empathic, non-judgmental other.
