People come to counselling because they have a desire to live their lives differently, and are seeking support to bring about this transformation. Psychotherapy is a relationship between a trained professional and an individual, couple, family or group whose purpose is to create change in their lives.
I come from a Humanistic framework that situates the person as an expert in his/her life- this knowledge may be hidden under years of pain and turmoil, or lost in present day grief or loss, but it is always in the person. I also recognize that people do not live in isolation; and our relationships to others, to our community and society have a significant impact on each of us, and must be acknowledged.
In therapy, a greater understanding of our lives and subsequent change in our circumstances occurs through dialogue. In my work, dialogue can also include art, expressive play and other modalities that allow people to connect on a more intimate level with their self and with others.
I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a graduate degree in Social Work. I also have further training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SPI), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Play Therapy, and Satir Family Therapy. This means that each individual, couple and family who comes into therapy will receive the therapeutic care they deserve based on each of their needs.
