I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I see clients in Downtown Nanaimo.
When working with clients I have three main goals. The first is to promote a sense of safety in the client. This is essential for the counselling process to work. The second goal is the alleviation of the client's immediate suffering. The third goal is the development of resilience to help protect the client against unnecessary suffering in the future.
I recognize that each client brings a unique set of strengths, potentials, and problems to therapy. Consequently I use an integrated approach to tailor the counselling sessions to each client's needs. This may include mindfulness-based cognitive approaches to deal with anxiety, addictions, depression and even relationships. I also have training in Hypnotherapy which is helpful in many situations including those mentioned above, self-esteem issues, letting go of the past and can be used to remove PTSD and phobias without re-traumatizing the client.
My counselling philosophy has been influenced by my background as a research scientist in biochemistry. As a result I use approaches that are grounded in proven effectiveness and are consistent with our understanding of how the brain works.
I have been a counsellor since 2002, working initially as an addictions counsellor in Vancouver, Whistler and Nanaimo. One of the interesting things about addiction is that it is not just about drugs. My clients and I worked through most of life's issues and this is where I developed expertise in other areas, including relationships and parenting.
If you feel that I may be of assistance to you please contact me by phone or email.
