In addition to my academic learning and counselling practice I have pursued a mindfulness practice since 1987 that has helped me to gain greater awareness of myself and how my experience impacts my world view and behaviour. Learning mindfulness is like learning to play a musical instrument. The more you practice, the better you get at it. It is a continuous learning experience. The important thing to remember when it comes to mindfulness is that it brings you into the present moment and puts you in touch with your thoughts, body sensations and reactions to life. Mindfulness can teach you how to respond to situations, instead of reacting, thereby helping to increase your choices in any given situation.
My counselling practice draws on over 30 years of professional experience in working with adolescents, adults and families, in both group and individual settings. I see my clients as the experts in their own lives and offer a safe, supportive, non-judgemental and integrative approach to help explore the underlying issues that prevent you from living the type of life you envision.
I provide an eclectic approach that is specifically tailored to you or your family’s needs. The tools I use to help elicit change include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness approaches, Motivational interviewing, Narrative therapy, and the Satir model, to name a few. My role is to enable you to recognize maladaptive patterns and help you in choosing more effective coping mechanisms that will bring greater ease to everyday challenges.
I completed my Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 1981. Once I began working with troubled teens, I knew I had found my calling. Through working in both government and non- profit organizations I developed my skill set and further honed my knowledge base by completing a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia in 1991. Over the years I have continued to participate in professional development on a regular basis in order to keep abreast of the latest approaches and widen my knowledge base on the subjects that affect my clients.
