Proximity to transit and or intersections:
I am a clinical counsellor and psychotherapist with a PhD from McGill University in Montreal and additional degrees from University of Toronto Columbia University in New York. I also hold a Certificate from the University of California in San Diego Medical School. I know firsthand what it means to relocate and to create new roots.
As a father, husband, son, stepson, brother, half-brother, stepbrother, son-in-law, and brother-in-law I’ve gained first-hand experience living in a mixed, blended, and multi-cultural family.
My clinical approach combines Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Bowen Family Systems, Adlerian Individual Psychology, Existential Analysis, Narrative Psychology, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy.
Since 2005 I have served as an adjunct professor (teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels), a thesis advisor, and a clinical internship/practicum supervisor. I feel fortunate to mentor a new generation of students through their learning process.
I work with individuals, couples, and families seeking to find a more meaningful path, to enhance communication with people in their life, and to develop better ways of coping with life’s stressors.
My key practice areas include:
· Relationship and post-relationship issues/patterns;
· Parenting support;
· Adjustments and transitions in life/relationship/work;
· Anxiety/panic, depression/low-mood;
· Assertiveness, self-esteem, stress-management;
· Men’s issues;
· Mindfulness meditation;
· Personal growth, performance, and creativity
I will work with your specific issues – to uncover unhelpful patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour – to increase your awareness and understanding, identify your unique strengths, and provide concrete strategies and tools to achieve your goals. I describe my counselling philosophy as holistic, personalized, collaborative, non-judgmental, and empowering.
I regularly hold groups and seminars. I am a regularly invited to give lectures and workshops at public and private organizations and association gatherings. I typically speak on communications, intergenerational family dynamics, men’s issues, parenting, anxiety, creativity, wellness skills, mindfulness, and living with chronic pain. As an advocate for clinical counselling and psychotherapy, I have served as a panel member making recommendations to UNSECO. I am an active participant in a monthly philosophical reading group. And I make documentary films that depict intimate portraits of people using creativity for personal healing. My films, which have been nationally televised and won a number of awards, may be viewed on my website (http://www.michaeldayan.com/films/). One of my greatest joys is spending time with my wife and children.
