I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and have worked as both a Clinical Counsellor and a social worker since 1983. I completed my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Simon Fraser University in 1999. Specialized training includes working with Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Clinical Hypnosis, Advanced Group Therapy and Psychological First Aid, substance abuse ( addictions), grief, anger management, anxiety and depression and trauma..
I am a well-seasoned psychotherapist whose experience is wide and varied and has encompassed working with individuals, families and groups from diverse cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds. I have had the opportunity to facilitate many wellness seminars, coach individuals and groups, deliver psychoeducational workshops, and to provide critical incident debriefing to traumatized individuals or groups. My interpersonal skills have led me to facilitate mediation for federal employees and I have been called upon by both government and the private sector to provide team building support and workshops. Additionally, I provide psychological assessment and counselling for refugee claimants. Not only have I been able to see clients in my private practice, I have been fortunate to lend assistance to people in their homes, worksites and other appropriate venues.
You are not a number, a diagnosis or a “case”. Good psychology does not presume that the patient is ill or broken and needs to be fixed. It is my responsibility to engage with you, to fully attend to you and not prescribe quick and easy “cures”. In forming a therapeutic alliance with you it matters not whether you are in the throes of an addiction, experiencing debilitating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, anger issues or problems in your relationships. I have experience in those areas and many more. It is my belief that positive change can occur as a consequence of an appropriate and respectful collaborative relationship between the therapist and patient. My hope is that true compassion and healing begin with this positive and engaging relationship.
I encourage clients to remember that there is some flexibility in my rates after the first session depending on the complexity of the issues and a person's (or family's) income. To paraphrase what it says on my website: "If money is the only issue you preventing you from continuing with therapy that is beneficial to you, I encourage you to negotiate with me".
