Mary has a Masters in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. She is a Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. After enjoying a successful career in nursing since 1981, her work in this field began in 1995, when she completed an Elijah House Christian Counselling Course. This work led Mary to a desire for more counselling tools so that she could help people of other faiths or without a faith base. This is when she decided to continue her education and she completed her Masters degree.
The goal of her counselling approach is to be inclusive to everyone. Mary offers each client a secure, comfortable environment, and a gentle ambiance. Mary's patience and insightfulness allows for a safe and caring connection to be established quite quickly. This foundation helps Mary to see what her client's world is made up of as, together, they work to draw out the whole person; self, other, and context. Her approach allows for unresolved issues to reveal themselves for exploration, and healing.
When working with couples, Mary is aware that the most common challenge is communication patterns. These patterns need to be examined in order to see how they affect each individual. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Mary guides couples to generate new strategies of relating that are designed to bring about a union that includes more intimacy and connection.
Mary has a strong belief that, in order for therapy to be truly transformational, clients need more from their counselling session than just to talk to someone about their issues. They also need to experience change. Through Mary's grounded guidance, informed by the Satir model, she strives to empower her clients to embrace the present and, with new tools, move fearlessly into the future.
